The Embroiderers Guild

Visitors could enjoy a unique exhibition from the Embroiderers Guild on the work of Royal Couturier, Mr Roy Allen. Mr Roy, as he is known, held a Royal Warrant for dress design for HRH Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. Mr Roy also designed for Diana, Princess of Wales and Princess Margaret and continues to design for the Duchess of Cornwall. He has had many notable clients and still accepts special commissions. The Guild also had an exhibition of works from Diana Spingall's book, 'Inspired to Stitch' and both Roy and Diana were there to meet visitors on the Thursday. Diana signed her books, including the recent reprint, 'Design for Embroidery'.

Afghanistan Inspiration

We were proud to launch the selected tour of 'Afghanistan Inspiration' supported by Madeira Germany, the DAI (Deutsch-Afghanische Initiative) a humanitarian project involving the women and girls in Laghmani village, Afghanistan. The aim is to help the women of this poor war-torn region to become more self-sufficient by creating 8 x 8cm embroideries to their own designs. The embroideries are then systematically paid for and sold in Europe.

'The Duchess' Costumes

A superb capsule collection of stunning OSCAR and BAFTA winning costumes from the celebrated British film 'The Duchess' starring Keira Knightley and Ralph Fiennes The film traces the controversial life of Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire, who shared strikingly tragic similarities to Diana, Princess of Wales. Although born two centuries apart, both women were Spencers, married to older, wealthy men. Like Diana, Georgiana suffered a complicated love life, but found consolation in the outpouring of public affection. Both charismatic women, they became celebrated fashion icons of their time, guaranteeing celebrity status. Click here for details of The Duchess Fashion Design competition.
